The Congregational Church of Patchogue in cooperation with
the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts presents:
The Apology of Socrates
A FREE performance presented at the Congregational Church of Patchogue,
95 East Main St. (just east of the theatre).
Socrates
isn't sorry about anything! That's because, in Greek, "apology" means
"defense." This theatrical, solo performance by the Emmy Award winner Yannis
Simonides is a delightful and quite humorous dramatization of the famous
philosopher's defense while on trial for his life hi Athens. Why should
people on Long Island in 2007 care what some obscure Greek philosopher had
to say to save his neck hi a trial with 501 jurors that took place about 400
years before the birth of Christ?
•
Religious persons might be interested in the philosophical discourse that
took place in multi-ethnic, ancient Athens at a time when Greek gods, Hebrew
patriarchs and, eventually, persons such as the apostle Paul vied for
dominance of their world-view in one of the world's great cities of the
time.
•
Political persons might be interested in the perspective presented in a
court of law in a civilization that is credited in creating democracy.
• Theatrical persons might be interested in seeing the amazing talent of
Mr. Simonides, as well as superb direction by the Broadway and television
veteran Loukas Skipitaris; set design by the Oscar and Tony award winner
Theoni Vahliotis Aldredge; and percussive support provided by Paul Taylor
veteran dancer-musician, Caryn Heilman.
The
Apology premiered in New York in 2003, and has been performed at the United
Nations, Columbia University, the Athens Agora, the NEC Today Show, and in
theaters, schools, universities, libraries, and festivals across the United
States, Greece, Turkey, and England (where it recently completed a
triumphant tour of Oxford, Cambridge, and Edinburgh Universities). Tours in
the United States, Canada, Russia, Japan; and Uruguay, and an Off Broadway
debut are scheduled for 2008.
This
performance is sponsored in part by the Suffolk County Legislature, with
thanks to County Legislator Jack Eddington.
